Well you heard it here first. That's right, the school year is starting. For some this means a new school and the chance to reinvent. That means reinventing your wardrobe too! But even if you are simply returning to the same old same old, this is no reason not too reinvent yourself anyway. Each year brings about the oppurtunity to erase preconceptions and repair you reputation. It is difficult to change your appearance ( there is only so far a haircut and some makeup can go) but it is always easy to change your style! In fact, the clothes on your back are often the quickest way to jump start a rapid change! There are so many new people who you can become, you could delve into Marc Jacob's fall line and transform into a jaunty, athletic sailor girl with his new navy and white tank dresses. Or develop an image of propriety with the new fringe suspender skirt from 3.1 philip lim. There are so many must haves in the new fall collection that the possibilitys are endless. As human beings, we are meant to be constantly developing and growing. So don't let past years hold you back. The new you might be just around the corner- or at least around the sales rack!

Hard to live in the City

For the past three weeks I have been esconced in the city of New York participating in summer courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology. This was my first taste of a true college experience. I was living alone in the city, in one of the NYU dorms. Commuting to FIT everyday and doing my own laundry, buying all of the necessities and experiencing the city as a native. Four days a week from 9:30 to 4:30 i would go to class and then afterwards my time would be spent doing work for the two classes I was taking. The first of the classes I was taking was Fashion Art in which I honed my skill as a designer. I learned how to improve my fashion sketches and the basics of putting together a mood board and rendering different clotheing in a sketch. I learned about all sorts of different fabrics and how to incorporate them into a design. The class was taught by the talented artist Anna Kipper whp is a designer fot teh Haute Couture company Maggie Norris. Our projects for said class were only two but they were challenging and took time and energy to perfect. The first was to design a line of 1960's inspired swimwear and the second was to design a lingirie collection based on a movie. On the last day of class we were asked to design an evening dress for a celebrity of our choice. My first collecting recieved only a B- and my second a B+ which brought my average to a B. Not bad for a college as demanding as FIT! My second class was Urban wear in which we were given much more freedom to let our imaginations run wild as designers. We were asked to design a dark glamour line, an atheletic wear line, and a line based on superheroes! But when classes were over I was free to go out on my own and experience New York City proper.



City Style has no limitations and is often well beyond the progression of style in most other areas. Trends that I saw more often than not were ankle boots and gladiator sandals as well as the lady like trend of tucking ones shirt into a belted pair of shorts. Denim button downs and fedoras were quite popular and as I said in an earlier post of mine, florals are back baby! And be sure to get yourselves a pair of oxfords because this is a trend that you have to claim ahead of time! Rompers are here to stay the high waisted trend is more popular than ever. In my adventures I met a couple of models and was scouted by one modeling agent. Based on these two connections I was asked to participate in a Balthasaar Verdugo fashion show being held in Battery Park. The look was a flurorescent 1970's punk the likes of which had not been seen since Grease!
