Playing Dress Up!

Rodarte's slasher inspired evening gown:
What is fashion if not an escape from oneself? Ok,most people would say that the point of fashion is actually to be an expression of oneself. This is true, however one can most certainly express themselves through a costume that might be astronomically different from how people normally percieve them. After all, when I dressed up as Simba for Halloween three years running (kindergarten through second grade to be exact), I did so because Simba was how I saw myself, to dress up as just another Disney Princess would have been a cruel bastardization of my interior persona. And now as a seventeen year old I still play dress up everyday. One day I may be feeling Audrey Hepburnish and don a pair of skinny black pants, another day may be my Joan Jett day which would require the use of a leather jacket. All simply different versions of myself. When I say that it is important to use fashion to transform yourself into someone else, I am not telling you to shed your own identity, only hoist yourself out of the rut which you have inadvertantly created for yourself. Just because you see yourself as a preppy varsity polo player does not mean that you are condemned to a lifetime of polo shirts and boat shoes, there are still many other layers to your personality which you may be keeping under wraps. You may be a fan of French film or a secret badass who was responsible for the principal's car ending up on the roof of the school building, who simply never took credit for the daring act for fear that it would sully your goody goody jock reputation (these two supplementary persona's would require a striped t shirt and a pair of leather leggings respectively). After all with all of the great new movie inspired looks on the runway, feel free to act like a kid again and engage in your secret love for dress up. One of Rodarte's old collections was inspired by Japanese horror films and the late Alexander McQeen (may he rest in peace) constantly designed for the fashion chameleon Stefanie Germanota (better known as Lady Gaga). When you are fearless with fashion, every day can feel like Halloween, except that you are not giving up yourself by dressing as someone else, only letting out another side of yourself. I know that I will certainly be sporting the vibrant colors and African inspired patterns recently being shown at Louis Vuitton, The Lion King never did stop being my favorite movie!
